How do we measure success? I know that as a professional success coach, I should be able to answer that question, but in reality, I don’t think there is one correct way to reply. Success looks different to everyone, and as a result, the road to success looks different too! The first thing you need to do is think about how you personally are going to define success. What does it mean to you? Is success becoming a CEO? Is success starting a family? Is success earning your first million dollars? Is success going back to school to retrain? The answer is unique to you, but once you have pinpointed it, you will be better placed to work with a success coach like me to plot out your path.
Is Success a Single Destination?
One of the things that I always ask people when they hire me as their success coach is whether or not they will stop once they achieve their idea of success. Is it a single destination? My personal opinion is that success is an ongoing, lifelong journey. There is always another goal around the bend to shoot for! That’s why it helps to break down your long term goals into smaller milestones – you get to celebrate your success every step of the way, and that can really help motivate you to keep moving forward. Your road to success shouldn’t be a dead end. It can always extend beyond your initial destination as you move on to bigger and better things.
Expect to See Failure on the Way
One thing you need to know about your road to success is that it is unlikely to take you straight from A to B! It is wise to expect a few bumps along the way and be prepared for them. Failure is a massive part of becoming successful. We learn the best lessons when we are recovering from mistakes or failures. It doesn’t matter how often you fail as long as you pick yourself up, learn from the experience, and continue on your journey. As your success coach, I will be there to help you overcome these hurdles.
Appreciate the Journey
Life is not a race to the finish line. It doesn’t matter how fast you achieve success – only that you get there eventually! Stop comparing your journey to others. So what if that other guy is a CEO at 23 and you are already 35 and just starting on your journey to that particular goal? That is his path to success, and this one is yours! Stay focused on your own journey, and appreciate the steps you take along the way. While it is essential to keep your eye on the prize, don’t let that stop you from appreciating the journey. When you appreciate the work it takes to find success, you will be more motivated and much happier.
It’s Okay to Change Direction
Another thing I have learned during my time as a success coach is that sometimes success is a moving target. There may be times during your journey when your idea of what success means to you changes. If you are working your way up the ladder in your chosen career, you may find that a few years down the line, your goals may shift. It is important to understand that this is natural, and you don’t have to fight it. All you have to do is change course!
