When you want something, you need to work for it. Achieving success will never be a walk in the park. Along the way, you will need to make some tough decisions and face difficult challenges. It is also likely that some unexpected hurdles might appear that you haven’t considered before. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is the perfect example. Lockdown derailed plans for a lot of people, and many of them likely just gave up because it got too hard to keep going. You are not going to be one of those people. As your motivation coach, it is my job to make sure that you regroup and keep moving.
Let’s take a look at a few of my strategies for persevering through challenging tasks and situations.
1 – Stay Focused on the Positive Outcome
If you have been following my live video series, you have probably heard me talking about ‘knowing your why.’ When you find yourself in a difficult situation, it is helpful to know why you are putting yourself through the pain. It’s got to be worth it. This can apply to any stressful situation from losing weight to building your business or even furthering your education. As your motivation coach, my advice is that when you are ready to quit because times are tough, stop for a moment and focus on the positive consequences or outcomes that you are working towards. How much better is your life going to be when you reach your goal? This is going to help you to stay focused and motivated to succeed. Keep visualizing that positive outcome.
2 – Pay Attention to Your Emotions
Sometimes, when times are tough, it is easy to get emotional. It is perfectly natural to get emotional about things, especially those you are passionate about. However, when those emotions start overwhelming you and stop you from progressing through a difficult task, then it starts to become a problem. Regulating your emotions is a valuable skill to learn. It is important to give validation to your feelings and allow yourself to have them, but when you need to dust yourself off and keep moving, it is important to know how to keep them in check. As a motivation coach, some of the techniques I suggest to my clients include focusing on a happy memory or thinking about an enjoyable task. It might not get you out of a tough situation, but it could give you that little boost of positivity that you need to get over the hump. It is also a great idea to look for the positive in every situation. Maybe you had a particularly difficult day – but did the work you did bring you closer to your goals? Was your child or pet waiting at home excited to see you when you got done working? Did that lift your spirits? Be thankful for your blessings, no matter how small, and use them to help manage your emotions.
3 – Don’t Forget to Monitor Your Progress
Setting goals is an integral part of achieving success. One of the first things that I do when someone signs up to have me as their motivation coach is to ask them to set goals. In addition to the main goal, I also recommend smaller milestones along the way to help keep you on track. Whenever things start to get tricky and thoughts of quitting cross your mind, you can look back at those goals and monitor your progress so far. You will be able to see how much work you have already done and what you have already achieved. This makes it more difficult to just throw it all away and is a great motivator to keep moving forward.
4 – Think About That Finish Line
Often the toughest times are when we are nearing the end of our journey. That goal is almost within touching distance, but maybe you just don’t feel like you have it left in you to get there. I am here as your motivation coach to tell you that you are wrong! You do have it in you. This is your dream, and you have to work for it even when things get tough. Think about that finish line and how close it is. For example, if you set a goal to run 10 miles, and you are ready to quit after 9, think about how close you are to the end. You can push just a little bit more and make it that final mile, right? Of course, you can! Just like looking at the progress you have already made can serve as motivation to continue, so can looking at how close you are to finishing! Let’s keep going and wrap it up!
